TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - State-owned postal service PT Pos Indonesia is currently celebrating the National Book Day and the year-long free public book donation program. The program is held every month on the 17th meant to invite the public to donate books.
“Indonesia’s literacy in 2017 was less satisfying, we were ranked 64th from the total of 68 countries. This program will hopefully increase people’s interest in reading and will hopefully improve the literacy of Indonesia’s remote regions,” said Gilarsi W Setijono, Pos Indonesia President Director at his office.
This event is planned to be attended by Indonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla, together with several state officials from the Education and Culture Ministry and the Communication and Informatics Ministry.
In order to ease the book distribution, Pos Indonesia has partnered with community reading parks across Indonesia. Up until April 2018, there were 25,580 books distributed from the post office to reading parks.
The book donation program was launched back in June 17, 2017, at the East Jakarta post office and was attended by Communication and Informatics Ministry Rudiantara together with several public figures such as Najwa Shihab.
