Surabaya Bombing: Police Detonate Leftover Explosives in Church

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The East Java Police's Bomb Squad (Gegana team) detonated the remaining active bombs at the Surabaya Central Pentecostal Church (GPPS) at Arjuno Road. On Sunday, May 13, bombs went off in three churches at the province's capital, including the Pentecostal Church.
"The remaining active bombs were detonated inside a vehicle of the squad. Everyone must stay clear from it," one of the bomb squad member said.

The Gegana Team members put the active bombs inside the defuser car and detonated it. As of 12:30 local time, the squad had detonated two bombs that were left inside a car near the vicinity of the church.
The bomb that went off at the Pentecostal Church is suspected to have exploded inside a car that went in to the church's yard.

Other churches in Surabaya that were attacked by bombs are the Indonesian Christian Church (Gereja Kristen Indonesia) at Diponegoro and the Santa Maria Catholic Church at Ngagel Madya.
Based on the information Tempo received, the bombs went off one after another with about five-minutes of intervals.
East Java Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Frans Barung Mangera said eight people died in the attacks while 33 suffered injuries. The National Chief of Police Gen. Tito Karnavian is currently in Surabaya to monitor the post-bombing situation.
