Thousands of Workers Ready to Rally at State Palace in May Day

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Andi Gani Nena Wea, President of the Indonesian Workers Union Confederation (KSPSI) said that the confederation will mobilize at least 75,000 – 85,000 people in the international worker’s day or May Day in front of the State Palace in Jakarta on May 1.
“We estimate around 75,000-85,000 people that will participate in the rally. Overall, it will be 200,000 throughout the country,” said Gani when Tempo met him at Kemang, South Jakarta on Saturday evening.
Furthermore, Gani guaranteed that this year’s rally will be held peacefully as previous years. “I have led the rally for eight years and there have never been any large scale clashes,” he said.
The 2018 May Day will be held in front of the State Palace from 09:00 AM that will be joined by workers from Greater Jakarta regions such as Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi. Workers from the West Java region is said to join their peers in Jakarta.
Manpower Minister Hanif Dhakiri hoped that this year’s worker’s day could be held in a positive and uplifting atmosphere. “Do as you please with positive activities, go ahead and hold a rally as long as its in an orderly fashion,” he maintained.
