TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The association of Indonesian travel companies (ASITA) of East Nusa Tenggara Abed Frans revealed that issues of waste, especially plastic waste in the Komodo National Park area has been highlighted by UNESCO.
“All these times, foreign tourists have complained about issues of waste at Komodo. The problem is that it has not been handled up to this day, which is why UNESCO has started to take notice of this issue,” said Abed Frans in Kupang today.
Furthermore, he explained that tourists visiting the Komodo National Park would often find manmade trash at sea, which he claims is a contrast to previous years.
“It’s such a shame when tourist that specializes in diving and surfing, all they witness are trashes and the destruction of the ecosystem instead of the beautiful underwater scenery,” said Abed.
Abed called for an intensive supervision by local state administrators or other stakeholders before the condition reaches its critical phase. He also assured that ASITA will provide assistance.
Back in September 2017, this issue attracted the attention of the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry that introduced ‘the love of the sea movement’ aptly known as GITA LAUT.
