TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises (SOE) planned to establish a consortium with state-owned enterprises to develop a social media platform similar to Facebook following the social media giant data breach scandal.
The Deputy of Business Infrastructure at SOE Ministry Hambra Samal confirmed that state-owned enterprises have no problem in creating an Indonesian version of Facebook because he believed that SOEs have the required capital and human resources.
"If the country needs such platform, state-owned enterprises are obliged to fulfill the request," Hambra said following a review session of Law No. 19/2003 on State-owned Enterprises in Jakarta, April 18, 2018.
Hambra stated that the government needs to project the business scale and the investment of the Indonesia version of Facebook. State-owned telecommunication company PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia (Telkom) and other tech-based SOE subsidiaries can gather to set up a consortium.
"Is it enough if it's only Telkom or if the company has to synergize [to develop the social media], it depends on the needs. If it costs billions Rupiahs, perhaps a partnership is required," Hambra said.
