TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - People may find it difficult to stay away from social media but you do not need to avoid and try to be wise using it.

Here are several tips in using social media to keep out from FOMO (fear of missing out) or other bad habits such as impulsive shopping, especially on Instagram.

1. Social media is not a real life

Keep in mind that the world in social media is not the same as in the real life. “In social media, we typically want to show our best sides,” said Ted Klontz, a finance consultant and psychologist from Nashville, United States.

According to Klontz, what people see in social media is no different as an entertainment show. Seeing people’s lives is not a real thing. “It's very difficult to overcome that [a desire to follow others’ lifestyle],” Klontz said.

2. Know that you are an advertisement target audience

A social media such as Instagram is an advertisement board. Every product ads are displayed on Instagram through photo or video endorsement. Many social media artists, the celebrity on Instagram (celebgram), and social media influencers are clever enough to do implied promotion to attract their followers buying the product they display.

"It's not by accident that many of those people on social media are actually sponsored by companies that sell things,” Klontz noted.

Moreover, many celebgrams promoted a product is not because they like the goods but they were bound by the contract. And social media user is their target audience.

3. Make your priority

A certified financial planner Boneparth said the key to not giving into social media-driven is to focus on your own goals and understand what is your priority. Many people who are easily influenced by others are those who did not know their own goal and what is important to themselves.

"Millennials will have an easier time focusing on things that matter to them financially instead of spending money for temporary satisfaction," he said.

4. Be honest with yourself

Other than financial matter, this is the reason you should not follow the trend in social media since not all trends suit your personality.

Be honest with yourself. Is the thing you buy, the activity you do, or other things that you copy from social media your true personality? If it is not, it is such a waste of money and time if you only imitate other people’s life.
