TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Malaysian High Court's verdict on March 29, which sentenced the 8-year prison to the employer of an Indonesian Migrant Worker (TKI) Suyanti, was responded positively by the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Director of Indonesian Citizens Protection of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Lalu Muhammad Iqbal said the reversal of the sentence by the high court was not a lobbying process.
He explained that when a case entered the legal process, the Ministry entrusts it to the legal process in the country of the case. The ministry also respects the judge’s decision in the torture case of Suyanti.
Suyanti's employer in Malaysia, Rozita Mohamad Ali (44) has pleaded guilty torturing Suyanti. It was done using a kitchen knife, mop handle, and umbrella to make Suyanti seriously injured.
Rapid criticism occurred when Rozita was only sentenced to five years of good behavior and a fine of 20,000 ringgit in first instance court.
“Suyanti has received all of her rights, ie salary. Even adequate compensation has been obtained by Suyanti," said Iqbal.
Suyanti, 21 years old, has returned to Indonesia in early 2017. The torture case against her as a TKI from Medan, North Sumatra, happened at her employer's house in Mutiara Damansara, Malaysia, on June 21, 2016.
