TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - E-KTP graft defendant Setya Novanto did not hide the fact that he was surprised when the public prosecutor charged him with a 16-year imprisonment in yesterday`s trial.
“Quite frankly, as a person, I was really surprised [by the charge]. I'm honestly caught off guard by the severe indictment,” said Setya Novanto after the trial at the Jakarta corruption court on Thursday, March 29.

However, he said that he trusts his future to the ongoing legal process. Setya was visibly calm and composed since the beginning of the court session. He calmly sat in the defendant’s chair while making slight movements throughout the e-KTP trial.
Setya Novanto is charged with a 16-year prison sentence and fined with Rp1 billion or a six-month subsidiary jail sentence.
Particularly, in this case, prosecutors considered Setya was guilty of receiving US$7.3 million and a Richard Mille wristwatch valued at US$135,000 from the electronic ID card (e-KTP) project.
The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) prosecutor also requested that Setya Novanto is stripped of his political rights for five years after he served his sentence.
