TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian consumer's foundation (YLKI) said that The Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) has the responsibility to investigate the root cause of the canned mackerel products that were found to be infested with roundworm.
“The possibilities are limitless, which is why it must be investigated,” said YLKI researcher Sulastri yesterday.
Sulastri also asked BPOM to re-confirm whether the three canned mackerel products, HOKI Mackerel, IO Mackerel, dan Jack Farmer that had parasites were in fact registered as imported products.

However, she urged consumers to be more rigorous before purchasing any type of product, especially imported ones. Sulastri said that customers can identify officially imported products by the ML code the product bears and be more wary of reprinted expiration dates, as many past cases suggest.
“Because the products were already expired from the country where it was imported from,” said Sulastri.
Previously reported, the Pekanbaru BPOM released its lab test report on three imported canned mackerel products mentioned above that turned out to be infested by worms.
The agency has also sent an official warning to the importers and required them to recall the mackerel products from the market.
