TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Pekanbaru`s Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) recently banned the distribution of canned mackerel Farmer Jack after the agency discovered that it contained hazardous parasites.
According to BPOM, the parasites they found to be inside the canned mackerel were nematodes or roundworms that can potentially breed inside human organs.
“We have banned the distribution of this brand. The distributor must immediately recall the products that are already sold and return it to the importer in Batam,” said Rita Ariestya, Pekanbaru BPOM inspector on Tuesday, March 20.
The agency immediately followed-up their findings by inspecting the distributor’s warehouse and confiscating the brand that was already sold in a number of supermarkets throughout the City of Selatpanjang.
According to Rita, the imported canned mackerel was already registered under the BPOM license in 2016 and were imported by PT Prima Niaga Indomas in Batam. The brand is produced by a Chinese company named Zhang Zou Tan Co Ltd.
Furthermore, Rita said that several samples of the canned mackerel Farmer Jack have been sent to Jakarta’s BPOM for further testing.
