TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Metro Police arrested the Surabaya Black Hat group of hackers that consist of college students majoring in IT. This group often hacks into private company’s electronic systems.

“[The targets] are from private sector businesses,” said Adj. Comm. Roberto Pasaribu, head of Cyber Crimes Directorate on Wednesday, March 14.

Based on the investigation conducted by Jakarta Metro Police’s cybercrime task force, there are at least 3,000 electronic systems in 40 countries that became the target of this group that consists of college students.

However, the hackers have managed to infiltrate a government organization in Los Angeles. “They hacked the electronic systems, not its site,” he explained.

On March 11, the cybercrime task force arrested three members of the Surabaya Black Hat who are all 21-year-old IT college students in Surabaya.

Roberto explained that the companies that the group hacked initially reported to the Department of Justice before it was then handled by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

“[The FBI] gave us information for us to investigate,” said Roberto.

Members of the Surabaya Black Hat would often demand ransom be paid through PayPal or in the form of Bitcoins once they manage to hack into the victim’s computer system.
