Microblogging Site Tumblr Blocked over Pornographic Contents

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Communication and Informatics officially blocked microblogging and social networking website Tumblr. The ministry found that it had 360 accounts with pornographic contents.

The ministry’s spokesman Noor Ihza explained that the decision was made after the ministry received numerous complaints from the public.

“After an investigation and content analysis was held, there were more than 360 porn accounts in tumblr.com and its application. We have blocked around 8 DNS on Monday, March 5,” said Noor on Tuesday, March 6.

According to Noor Ihza, the government has sent an official notice to Tumblr requesting that they clean their platform from any pornographic contents. The ministry said that it would permanently block the 8 DNS if Tumblr does not respond to the request in the next two days.

The Communication and Informatics Ministry received 8,575 reports regarding Tumblr’s negative contents in January alone. The 8,166 of them were the reports on pornographic contents. The second most reported negative contents on Tumblr was related to various online scams with 144 cases. 

Other than pornographic contents and online scams, the ministry also found 112 cases of copyright infringement and 104 reports of online gambling contained in Tumblr.com.
