TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Mount Krakatoa in Lampung province competed with Mount Etna, Italy, at the semifinals of Volcano Cup 2018. This competition is organized by the world volcanologists; one of them is Dr. Janine Krippner.
The voting is collected through a polling on a Twitter account under the name Janine Krippner. The netizen’ most chosen volcano will be discussed by volcanologists.
Besides Indonesia, the participating countries include The U.S., New Zealand, Mexico, Chile, Japan, Iceland, Italy, Philippines, and Guatemala. Four volcanoes from each of the countries have joint the voting on Twitter.
The Indonesia volcanoes to choose are Krakatoa, Merapi, Toba, and Gunung Agung. Krakatoa has gone up to the semifinals facing Mount Etna.
Currently, the polling is still underway. Krakatoa excels with 69 percent votes of 1,994 voters. While Etna gains 31 percent. The winner of the semifinal will be facing Mount Taupo, New Zealand.
Mount Krakatoa is located in the Sunda Strait between the Indonesian islands of Java and Sumatra. On August 27, 1883, the eruption was heard to Australia and Japan and led to the death of about 36,000 lives. The Mount Krakatoa eruption also drowned the beaches of Java and Sumatra.
