TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The black pizza fever boomed after the mainstream pizza franchise Pizza Hut offered a Black Meat Mosta in their latest menu on Wednesday, February 21. The dough for the pizza is claimed to be made of a plant-based coloring that is, of course, edible.

However, before their black pan pizza, there were other types of black-colored alternative foods that previously introduced in Indonesia.

1. Black Hot Dog

Warung Dog at Santa Market in South Jakarta can be considered as the first food stall to introduce delicious blackness to the city. The menu was featured as a regular since 2014 and immediately became a trend.

Specifically, this dish has the black buns while the sausages are not. Warung Dog stated that its products are edible and safe to consume.

2. Black Kebab

Ricky Ferdian Sutrisno is the owner and founder of the Black Kebab franchise. The black kebab was introduced to the market just a year after the popularity of the black hot dog.

It was initially known throughout Yogyakarta, Central Java, but thanks to the interesting black bread kebab, they had to expand their business to other major cities in Indonesia with Jakarta being one of them.

Interestingly, the way Black Kebab colors its kebab bread black is with the help of a specific fruit locally called “kluwek” which has been used for years in East Java’s traditional dish Rawon.

3. Black Burger

There are more than five cafes in Jakarta that offer cheeseburgers that come with black buns. This menu was the most recent to be introduced after the dishes mentioned above. According to Qraved, black bun burgers are served at five cafes namely Blacklisted Coffee, St. Germain By Cacaote, OTW Food Street Kelapa Gading, Georg Peck Cafe, and Fat Belly Truck.

Burger King had even participated in the black craze in 2017 when they introduced a black burger in their menu to welcome Halloween, back in November. Interestingly, unlike the other two in the list, the patty and burger buns are all covered in black.
