TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Institute for Development of Economics and Finance (Indef) recently conducted a research comparing job opportunities during the first three years under the leadership of Joko Widodo (Jokowi) and sixth President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY).
The results showed that job opportunities were lower during the Jokowi-Jusuf Kalla administration compared to the SBY-Boediono administration. “According to our calculation, the job opportunity ratio in the Jokowi-JK era is lower than the SBY-Boediono era,” said Indef Senior economist Dradjad H. Wibowo at the Indef headquarter today, Feb. 20.
He revealed that during the SBY administration, there were 467,000 people with jobs for every one percent economic growth. Meanwhile, the Jokowi-JK administration had 426,000 people with jobs.
Despite the statistics, Dradjad admits that the job creation ratio increased dramatically in the recent months. “There was a dramatic improvement where 641,183 jobs were created in 2017. Which is unusual and attracts questions,” he said.
There are several sectors in the Jokowi-JK era that has improved compared to the SBY-Boediono administration, such as the sector of agriculture, plantation, forestry, and fishery. This was also seen in the sector of electricity, gas, and drinking water.
The sector of accommodation, trade, and restaurants opened up 286,336 jobs under the Jokowi-JK administration compared to the 98,041 jobs opened in the SBY-Boediono administration.
Dradjad also suggested the government to not create regulations or policies that can potentially disrupt industries to absorb workers.
