Zakat from Muslim Civil Servants Potential to Maladministration

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Ombudsman Member of Religious, Social and Cultural Affairs, Ahmad Su'adi, stated that the deduction of Muslim civil servants' salaries by 2.5 percent for zakat is potential to maladministration.
According to Ahmad, zakat (alms) is a personal matter, the state should not interfere. Moreover, the zakat mismanaged will result in a great sin.

Ahmad said it has happened in East Lombok around 2006 or 2007, the Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) and local regents made the same policy. The civil servants feel disturbed and exploited. So they held a rally. The majority of the protesters are lower-level civil servants.
