TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Industry Minister Airlangga Hartarto stated that Indonesia is one of the major players in railway manufacture in Southeast Asia. Domestic railway industrial products have been able to meet the needs of both domestic and international markets, especially to developing countries and regional areas.

“We keep on pushing national railway industry to dominate domestic market and to increasingly play a role in the supply chain of the railway industry in the global market,” he said on Friday, Jan. 19.

Airlangga mentioned measures taken last year including the Ministry’s establishing Indonesia Railway Component Manufacturer Association (IRCMA).

In addition, state-owned train manufacturer PT Industri Kereta Api (INKA) integrates 50 members of Railway Small Industrial Association (PIKKA) consisting of a number of industries namely metal, rubber, plastic, research institutions and consultants.

In order to expand the export market, Airlangga went on, the Ministry supports national railway industry to produce technological innovation, especially for export products. In addition, national railway industry needs to establish business cooperation with and carry out a promotion to potential markets in Asia, such as Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, as well as Zambia, Nigeria and Egypt.
