TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Psychologist Rose Mini admits that she pities the sense of social media attachment which is experienced by today’s society, “I feel sorry kids nowadays,” she said.
Rose Mini argued that what today’s generation is practicing by showcasing every detail of their activity onto social media will only end up restraining their life.
“People who constantly showoff through their social media will not be able to move freely since every set of eyes will be watching them,” she said on Wednesday, January 10.
She gave a simple example of a situation where a person is occupied in taking pictures of their meal rather than enjoying the experience. “There should be a sense of privacy where they can simply enjoy [the meal],” she argued.
The habit of surfing the social media realm non-stop or making their feelings known could potentially present problems. She gave an example of someone who often updates their status onto social media will easily provide more material for someone to spark the anger a person in grief.
“People get easily hurt by social media. Anger can arise by simply being triggered by another [person's response],” she said.
Another element linked to the abuse of social media in the younger generation today is how they show their affection towards their loved ones. By simply updating their status suggesting that a couple is in a long distance relationship can be used by someone to use the situation for their benefit.
Rose Mini reminded today’s teens to think twice before uploading anything to social media and that they should not be easily tempted to upload every single detail of their life to social media. “Remember that social media users have varying intentions. Some are good and vice versa,” she said.
