KAI Records Nearly 400 Million People Commute by Train in 2017

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The state railway operator Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) recorded that there were 389 million train passengers in 2017. The number, according to KAI President Director Edi Sukmoro, has increased 16 percent compared to that in 2016 (352 million).
“That was the overall train users, either KRL (Commuterline), local and long distance trains,” said Edi at the Jakarta Railway Center on Tuesday, January 9.

Edi explained that the number of passengers in 2017 exceeded the company’s initial goal of 373 million passengers. Meanwhile, KAI was able to transport 4.85 million passengers during the Christmas and New Year’s holiday season, which is a 5 percent increase compared to 2016, he said.
According to Edi, during the holiday season, KAI also experienced “zero percent accident." He added that freight trains also experienced a 13 percent increase in users even though it is still under the company’s target.
