TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian internet public sphere was shocked by the news of the divorce papers filed by the currently imprisoned former Jakarta Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama or Ahok from his wife Veronica Tan.

Divorces may be common among celebrities and public figures. However, political figures are also not immune to the situation.

Here are five world political leaders who have dealt with divorces throughout their career.

1. Paul Keating

The former Australian prime minister divorced from his wife in 2008. Both had lived separately since 1998. Keating was no longer the leader of the Australian government when the pair divorced. He served his terms of office from 1991 to 1996.

2. Nicolas Sarkozy

The former President of France married his first wife, Marie-Dominique Culioli in 1982. The pair officially divorced in 1996, where not long after that, Nicolas Sarkozy was remarried to former model Cecilia Ciganer-Albeniz.

Unfortunately, their marriage did not last long since they divorced not long after Sarkozy was elected as President in 2007. Nicolas Sarkozy got married again for the third time in 2008 with Italian singer and model Carla Bruni.

3. Nelson Mandela

The late well-known South African President married Winnie Madikizela in 1958 after he separated from his first wife Evelyn Ntoko Mase. Madikizela was on Mandela’s side through his political career from 1962 to 1990. Mandela and Madikizela officially divorced in 1996 following a 38-year marriage.

Mandela then married Graca Machel who was 27 years younger than him until he passed away in 2013.

4. Prince Charles

The life of Prince Charles was arguably the center of the world’s attention after he married the late and sorely missed Diana Spencer, otherwise known globally as Lady Di. The pair married in 1981 and officially separated in 1996 which became international news headlines at the time.

Prince Charles married close friend Camilla Parker Bowles in 2005.

5. Donald Trump

The President of the United States Donald Trump went through two failed marriages before he finally met his current wife Melania Knauss in 2005. He was first married to Ivana Zelnickova in 1977 and have three children. They both officially separated in 1992 after Trump was known to have an affair with actress Marla Maples and married in 1993.
