Diphtheria Patients in Tangerang Soars to 73

A patient with diphtheria is undergoing a treatment.

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The total number of diphtheria patients in Tangerang Regency from December 2017 to early January 2018 has jumped to 73 patients.

Four of them were dead.

“In early Desember 2017, there were only 26 patients, and 47 patients emerged afterward,” Tangerang Health Agency Head Desiriana Dinardianti said on Sunday (7/1).

Desiriana said that the infectious disease has spread to other districts in which diphtheria cases were not found. The new patients are reported from a number of areas that have not executed Outbreak Response Imunization (ORI) for diphtheria.

“For areas with ORI , there have not been any new cases," she added.

To handle this disease, the Central Government launched the ORI. The first stage was held from December 11, 2017 to January 10, 2018, whilethe second and third stage will also be held.
