TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Over 2,000 cops were deployed during a pro-Palestine rally launched in front of the United States Embassy at Jalan Medan Merdeka Selatan today in Jakarta.

Central Jakarta Police Chief Sr. Comr. Roma Hutajulu told Tempo in an interview today that 1,500 people would be joining today’s rally.

Hutajulu said that people from Muslim organizations, such as the Laskar Pembela Islam (LPI) and Himpunan Mahasiswa Persatuan Islam (Hima Persis), launched a protest against U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

Hutajulu added that the Police will secure the protest until the mass disperse.

The pro-Palestine protest had been held since Friday, December 8. Three groups have taken to the street to condemn President Donald Trump’s decision, namely the United Development Party (PPP), the Al Aqsa Networking and Nahdlatul Ulama.

On Sunday, around 4,000 people held the so-called Aksi Bela Palestina or Defend Palestine Rally.
