A Brief Look at Early Career of TNI Chief Nominee Hadi Tjahjanto

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has nominated the Chief of Staff of the Air Forces (KSAU) Marshall Hadi Tjahjanto for the next Indonesia Armed Forces (TNI) chief to replace General Gatot Nurmantyo who will retire in March 2018. Observers said that it is now the Air Forces chief of staff’s turn to lead the military.

Hadi has been serving as Air Forces chief of staff for a year. On his inauguration day on January 18 at the Presidential Palace, Hadi commented on his meteoric rise to become the chief of staff.

Hadi said he would not decline any job offered by his superior. A soldier, he has sworn to carry out any duty and take any position being assigned to him.

Before replacing Marshall Agus Suparna, who was about to retire, the man who was born in Malang on November 8, 1963, held strategic positions at the Air Forces.

The following is the career of Hadi Tjahjanto in the Air Forces after graduating from the Air Force Academy in 1986 and the Air Forces Aviation School in 1987.

1999 - Flight Instructor at Adi Sucipto Airport, Yogyakarta

2000 - Head of Security and Defense at Adi Sucipto Airport

2001 - Agriculture Air Force Commander of Air Force Operations Command I

2004 - Head of Operational Department of the Air Forces Staff and Command Academy

2006 – Head of Personnel Office at Abdulrachman Saleh Airport, Malang, East Java

2007 – Head of Soldier Administration Sub Unit of the Air Forces Administration Office

2010-2011 – Commander of Adi Soemarmo Airport, Solo, Central Java

2010-2011 – Commander of Adi Sumarmo Air Base, Boyolali, Central Java

2011-2013 – Operational and Training Director of the National SAR Agency

2013-2015 – The Air Forces Head of Public Relations

2015 – Head of Abdulrahman Saleh Air Base, Malang

2015-2016 – Awarded Air Vice Marshall and appointed Presidential Military Secretary

2016 - Assigned the Defense Ministry Inspector General in October and awarded the rank Air Marshall.

January 18, 2017 - Soon after being inaugurated as the Air Forces chief of staff, Hadi Tjahjanto was awarded a four-star rank.
