TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Meghan Markle's big break came in the hit US legal drama Suits as she plays the feisty and fiercely intelligent Rachel Zane.

But now she's got one of the biggest jobs of life coming up - joining the Royal family after she and Prince Harry got engaged.

1. Before Meghan became an actress, she worked as a calligrapher

Meghan has previously revealed that she's talented when it comes to the penmanship trade.

The actress revealed in an interview that she previously worked as a professional calligrapher before breaking into the spotlight.

She told Good Housekeeping: “I used to be a calligrapher for weddings and events — that was my side job while I was auditioning."

"I think handwritten notes are a lost art form," she added.

2. Meghan is not her real name

Like a lot of actresses and stars, Meghan chose a different name to act as her stage name instead of her real one.

Meghan is actually her middle name, with her full name being Rachel Meghan Markle.

Other stars who have adopted different names include Emma Stone (born Emily Stone), Katy Perry (real name Katherine Hudson) and Brad Pitt (who, like Meghan, adopted his middle name and is actually named William Bradley Pitt).

3. Meghan has a gameshow background

When trying to secure her "big break" Meghan appeared on TV thanks to a well-known game show.

For one season only in 2006, the star worked as a "briefcase model" for the US version of Noel Edmond's hit, Deal or No Deal.

She later told Esquire: "I would end up standing up there forever in these terribly uncomfortable and inexpensive five-inch heels just waiting for someone to pick my number so I could go and sit down."

4. The star has a surprisingly diverse family background

Meghan has revealed she has African-American and Dutch-Irish blood in her immediate family tree.

Her mother Doria Radlan is African-American, and she met Meghan's Dutch-Irish father on the set of a TV show where they both worked.

She has since credited her history for allowing her to "keep a foot on both sides of the fence" when it comes to her own identification.

Writing for Elle Magazine, she said: “Being biracial paints a blurred line that is equal parts staggering and illuminating.”

“While my mixed heritage may have created a grey area surrounding my self-identification, keeping me with a foot on both sides of the fence, I have come to embrace that. To say who I am, to share where I’m from, to voice my pride in being a strong, confident mixed-race woman,” she added.

The star has since said that because her mother is black with dreadlocks, and she passes as Caucasian, she often came under fire growing up as people questioned whether her mother was, in fact, her biological mum.

Ignoring the cruel jibes, she has a tight relationship with her mum and was there to support her when she graduated with a master's degree in Social Work.

5. She has a degree in Communications

Meghan graduated from Northwestern University in 2003 with a degree in communications.

During her time at university, she was active in social secs and was also a member of sorority Kappa Kappa Gamma.

Since completing her degree, she has admitted that she wouldn't rule out a possible return to education to study for a master's degree.
