Domestic Toy Industry Generates Investments Worth Rp135 billion

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Industry Minister Airlangga Hartanto said that Indonesia’s domestic toy industry has generated investments amounting to US$10 million or Rp135 billion.
“The main thing from the investments itself is that it creates jobs,” said Airlangga at the Mattel Indonesia factory area in Cikarang, West Java, today.

The domestic investment climate, according to Airlangga, has boosted investors’ confidence in the domestic toy industry. He referred to the success of Mattel Indonesia for contributing 60 percent of the company’s global production.
Mattel Indonesia has also become the largest production center for Barbie dolls above China, Malaysia, Thailand, and Mexico.
“The Barbie’s production center has supplied more than 500 million dolls for the export market since 2008,” said Mattel Indonesia President Director Roy Tendean.

Minister Airlangga expects that the toy industry investments will generate US$130 million or roughly around Rp1.7 trillion by 2020. “it is currently at US$11-12 million,” said Airlangga.
Despite the achievement, Minister Airlangga said that it cannot be compared to other domestic industries such as the petrochemical and steel industry.
