JK Asks Chinese Investors Not to Bring Too Many Migrant Workers

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Vice President Jusuf Kalla (JK) has asked Chinese investors not to bring too many migrant workers to Indonesia.

“I said that the investment is excellent, but I expect less migrant workers,” JK said after receiving a courtesy visit from Chinese Deputy Prime Minister Liu Yandong today at the Vice Presidential Palace in Jakarta.

Liu Yandong has agreed to the request, JK said. He even claimed that China will train Indonesian workers both at home and in China to adjust to the needs of Chinese investors.

JK explained that the request was made based on previous experience in Chinese investment. Chinese investors typically bring thousands of workers to Indonesia.

At the meeting that lasted for an hour, JK and Liu also discussed cooperation between Indonesia and China, including in education and nuclear power.

JK said that cooperation in nuclear power is unlikely to materialize in Indonesia as the country is frequently struck by earthquakes.
