TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Thousands of online motor-taxi a.k.a. ojek drivers held a protest today. They marched from the Horse Statue Roundabout towards the State Palace, demanding the government to regulate the online ojek business, including regulating the tariff.
The Jakarta Residents Forum (FAKTA) chairman Azas Tigor Nainggolan said that online ojek drivers want the government to be strict in regulating the industry.
"We need clear rules on tariff, definition, operators and how to be one, consumer protection, service standards, and other, he said on Thursday, Nov. 23.
He also said the drivers want the government to care about their declining welfare. "Back then, we were offered [a pay] of Rp4,000 per kilometer when [business owners] were promoting. Now we only get Rp1,600 per kilometer," he said.
Tigor added that article 183 of Law No.22/2009 stated that public transportation tariffs should be decided by the users and the service providers—not the "applicator" or the company.
Six representatives from Go-Jek and Grab drivers were accepted by the Presidential Staff Office's Assistant Deputy IV for Political Communication and Information Dissemination, Yahya Tatang Badru Tamam.
In the meeting, Tigor said that the palace will review the issue with the president. Tigor said the online ojek drivers are giving the government one month to address the issue.
