TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Mall visitors were seen flocking one corner at the Matahari Department Store in Mal Taman Anggrek (MTA), West Jakarta, last night, Nov. 21. On the floor, dozens of shoes and their boxes are seen scattered.
The buyers were competing to get their hands on numerous famous brands of shoes such as Nevada, Details, Kickers, Rohde, Yongki Komaladi, and Connection. They frantically looked for a pair they like that fit.
One customer, Dita (26), had two boxes in her hand but was still looking for more. "While they're on discounts," she told Tempo on November 21.
As of 21:00, people were still lining up at the cash registers. The queue went as far as seven meters back; each cashier serving shoe buyers.
Matahari Department Store held out a closing sale, offering apparels like shoes, clothes and bags for a discounted price of up to 50 percent off. For some items, there was a buy-two-get-one promotion.
On December 3, the first floor of Matahari Mall Taman Anggrek will be closed. The floor had been selling shoes and cosmetics.
PT Matahari Department Store Tbk is shutting down its outlets in Jakarta's Taman Anggrek and the Lombok City Center in West Nusa Tenggara, next month.
"The company decided not to extend the lease for both spaces," Matahari Richard CEO and vice president director Gibson said on November 15.
The store is being closed in stages. On November 20, the 2nd floor, which housed children's clothes, was closed.
"The adult clothes outlets on the first floor will be closed on November 27, and the underground floor that sells shoes and cosmetics will be closed on December 3rd," an employee of Matahari said.
Matahari Department Store plans to open new retail outlets in Baturaja and Lahat, South Sumatra, and a Nevada specialty store at the Pakuwon Mall in Surabaya later this month.
