TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's coffee exports to South Korea in the first eight months of 2017 have recorded an increase of 53.01 percent to reach US$9.42 million as compared to the same period last year, according to the Trade Ministry.

The rise in coffee consumption in South Korea is the reason behind the high demand for Indonesian coffee in the country, Director General of Export Development at the Trade Ministry Arlinda stated on Tuesday.

According to the South Korean news agency Yonhap, a South Korean consumed 500 glasses of coffee on an average in 2016. The rising coffee consumption has increased Indonesia's coffee exports to South Korea by 14.39 percent in the past five years, she said.

Coffee consumption in Asia's fourth-largest economy rose 25 percent in the past decade. The Trade Ministry viewed the rise in coffee consumption as an opportunity to increase coffee exports to South Korea by participating in the Seoul Int'l Cafe Show 2017 held on Nov 9-12 at the Convention & Exhibition Center in Seoul, she said.

"Indonesia is the world's fourth-largest coffee exporter. The promotion is a great opportunity for Indonesia to showcase the variants and quality of its coffee as a sourcing destination in Asia to fulfill the high demand for coffee in South Korea," she said.
