PSM Makassar Finish Third in Liga 1, Syamsul Chaeruddin Retires

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - PSM Makassar failed to win the league this season as they finished third in Liga 1 final standings. Midfielder Syamsul Chaeruddin is disappointed with the result and has decided to retire after 15 years serving the club.

Aside from the failure, the 34-year-old also retires to give chance to new blood and spend more time with his family.

“I’m sorry for failing to bring the trophy for PSM after playing for 15 years with PSM.”

Against Madura United, Syamsul played in the second half after replacing Arfan. Hamka Hamzah immediately handed over the captain armband to Syamsul.

PSM Coach Rene Alberts said that the midfielder played well in his last match. 

PSM Makassar won against Madura United 6-1 in their final match of the season. The result put the team third in Liga 1 final standings. Despite failing to win the league, thousands of supporters invaded the pitch after the final whistle was blown to celebrate the achievement.
