TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - In his third year of serving his presidency, President Joko Widodo or Jokowi has focused most infrastructure development programs outside Java.

President Jokowi admitted that his decision to focus on developing regions outside Java is not aimed at strengthening his political position.

“I understand that it would be [politically] advantageous to develop infrastructures in Java if I were [chasing] a political edge,” said President Jokowi.

President Jokowi further explained that developing infrastructures in Java is economically much more profitable. The government could obtain a huge profit by only focusing on Java’s northern and southern regions.

However, President Jokowi asserted that a large margin of profit is not what he is aiming for. He said that he is more focused on providing a solution to problems related to economic inequality throughout thousands of Indonesian islands.
