TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The police said that the porn gifs in WhatsApp messenger need to be gone. Police spokesman Insp. Gen. Setyo Wasisto said the force will have a discussion about it with the Communications and Information Ministry.

"They must be removed or blocked because they are a bother to people," Setyo said in Jakarta, Monday, November 6.

Pornographic contents are found in WhatsApp in the form of gifs, searchable using certain keywords. WhatsApp first introduced gif-sending features in 2016 to Apple phones. Android users followed in March this year. The feature is made possible through a collaboration between WhatsApp and prominent gif producer Giphy.

WhatsApp's blog advises the app to be used only for those who are 13 years old and older. But many people lie about their age when registering their social media accounts.

The House of Representatives' (DPR) Communication Committee chairman Abdul Kharis Almasyhari also asked Communication and Information Ministry Rudiantara to block pornographic contents found in WhatsApp.

"The minister must block [WhatsApp] content with pornographic materials, related to the gifs," he said in a written statement, Monday.

The PKS politician is asking the ministry to use its authority as regulated by article 26 of the Electronic Information and Transaction Law.
