TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta - Gadjah Mada University (UGM) declined the proposition to new students admission by religious achievement in terms of memorizing a holy book. Such a decision is a response to a letter issued by UGM Dean of Economy and Business Faculty (FEB) who was willing to accept new students who are able to memorize and artistically recite the religious texts.
"Related to a letter issued by UGM Dean of Economy and Business Faculty No.5447/UN1/EB/KL/2017 on new students admission in UGM, it is stated that UGM Rector has decided to not accommodate such a proposal," UGM spokesperson Iva Aryani said on Saturday, November 4.
As a national university, Iva explained, UGM is open to anyone with any achievements, backgrounds, etc.In the implementation Three Missions of University (Tri Dharma), UGM is always founded on Pancasila, 1945 Constitution, and Indonesian Culture. "Such foundations are the bases of admission process in UGM," Iva said.
FEB UGM previously was willing to accept new students who are able to memorize and artistically recite the holy book. Such a proposal came up after an evaluation of 2017 new students admission held on October 24. The faculty is ready to accept new students by achievement.
However, the letter signed by UGM Dean of FEB Eko Suwardi did not specifically mention a particular religion. "It was only a proposal and not officiated. It did not even reach to a decision of the number of the students with religious achievements and further consideration," Eko said on Saturday.
