TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said that government will expand Sultan Hasanuddin Airport, Makassar, South Sulawesi, twice as large.
Budi stated this measure responded to questions on what has been done and will be done by the ministry in a transportation dialogue entitled "South Sulawesi and Eastern Indonesia Connectivity " held in Hasanuddin University, Makassar, South Sulawesi on Friday, Oct. 27.
"So, we will carry out further development, such as expanding Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport, Makassar, twice as large," he said.
The plan of expansion is caused by the over limit of the airport capacity.
The high number of passengers in the airport is triggered by a number of factors one of which is related to the economic growth of South Sulawesi Province.
Such a growth is accompanied by the development of people’s economy and it resulted in higher preferences to transport by plane compared to other means of transportation.
"Currently, we plan to build Sultan Hasanuddin to serve transportation in the period of 10 years, but with only five years of development, its full capacity has been reached. This shows that volumes of passengers in Makassar are substantial," Budi explained.
