TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Religious Affairs Office in Jember, East Java, will annul the same sex marriage between two individuals with the initials of MF, 21, and AA, 23, on the ground that they used forged documents to register the marriage.

Jember police are currently investigating the case. Local Religious Affairs Office head Fachrur Rozi said that he will annul the marriage deed.

“We deeply regret that the same sex marriage has happened and I have instructed all KUA [marriage registrar offices] in Jember to be more diligent in verifying administrative requirements for marriage,” he said yesterday.

Jember police have named MF and AA as suspects for giving false statements in the application for a marriage deed. AA, a man, falsely claimed he was a woman named Ayu Puji Astuti by forging his identity when registering his marriage in early July.

“Following an investigation by Jember police, it turned out that Ayu Puji Astuti, MF’s wife, is a man; the KUA feels like it has been duped,” Jember police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Kusworo Wibowo said.

The two of them have been arrested by police for document falsification. They are facing a maximum of 7 years sentence, police said.

The case that involved same sex marriage attracted social media`s attention because the police arrested the couple.
