Campaign Atmosphere Revived in Anies Baswedan Inaugural Speech

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - State Law expert Refly Harun was reluctant in responding to the speech given by the newly elected Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan who infamously mentioned about defending Jakarta’s indigenous society during his inaugural speech.

Refly said that he is not interested in criticizing the choice of words the governor gave yesterday, instead he assessed that he would focus on how the governor would run the city, “What’s important is the policies he would introduce and his actions. Because that is what directly affects the citizens of Jakarta,” said Refly Harun on Tuesday, October 17.

He argues that there was nothing special in the governor’s speech. Furthermore, Refly said that Anies Baswedan has yet to showcase the mentality of a leader who won an election. “There was a nuance of an electoral campaign in [Anies Baswedan’s] speech yesterday,” said Refly.

Anything can be exploited during a political campaign to win votes, Refly argued, but supporters and oppositions must reunite once a candidate gets elected. He also said that everything that happened during a political campaign must be able to be forgotten.

“The supporters and oppositions must become partners to constantly provide constructive criticisms to see how far the governor (Anies Baswedan) can keep his campaign promises,” said Refly.
