TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An agreement between Southeast Asia transportation ministers on aviation liberalization has been welcomed by flag carrier PT Garuda Indonesia. Corporate Secretary Hengki Herdiandono said that the agreement presents an opportunity to expand its market share.
“We are pleased that the number of our international flight passengers can increase,” he told Tempo in a phone interview yesterday. Hengki said that the company has nothing to worry about as it already established international flight routes to Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand.
Therefore, he has called on an open aviation area according to the agreed routes. He said that reciprocity is a must.
The Southeast Asia airline codeshare agreement was co-signed by Indonesia Transportation Minister Budi Karya on Saturday. A codeshare is an aviation business agreement wherein two or more airlines share the same flight. A seat may be bought by an airline while operated by a partner under a different flight numbers and code.
Aside from flight routes, the agreement will help improve cooperation in airline catering services. “The investment has become more open and varied,” Minister Budi said.
