TEMPO.CO, Denpasar - Bali Governor I Made Mangku Pastika said that the island is safe for tourists despite Mount Agung alert status. “Don’t hesitate to come to Bali,” he said in a meeting with tourism businesses yesterday.
He reasoned that Mount Agung eruption would not directly affect 28 villages or other villages located 12 kilometers from the crater. Tourist attractions, such as Nuas Dua, Kuta, Sanur and others are located dozens of kilometers away from the highest mountain in Bali. “In Karangasem, there are 78 villages, only 28 villages would be directly affected, the remaining 50 will be safe,” he said.

Today’s situation is different to 1963—when the mount last erupted—because disaster mitigation has improved and the government’s role is more effective, he added. Moreover, advanced information technology can minimize the worst case scenario.
The Governor told tourism businesses to provide positive information to travel agencies and consulate generals in Bali and bust hoaxes.
“I also plan to meet consuls in Bali to clarify current Bali situation.” The aim is to tackle misinformation regarding the Mount Agung. He expects countries that have issued a travel warning revoke it. “Bali is safe, you can come and travel to Bali.”
