TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The government will provide opportunities to private companies to build 10 out of 20 construction of airports and harbors in Indonesia. "It is better to offer opportunities to private companies since they are after profit," Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said in Jakarta on Saturday, Sept. 30.
Budi stated that if private companies are given opportunities to build airports and harbors, this will add to State Budget. "We are doing this for the first time. We have seen that when projects are run by private companies, such projects will most likely develop because they will try their best to leverage profit," he said.
The airports to be built are in Kalimantan including Nunukan Malinau, Yuvai Semaring, Juwata, Long Adung, and Tanjung Harapan. In addition, airports in South Banten and Cirete-Sukabumi will soon be built.
The development of air and water transportation infrastructure, Budi continued, is expected to boost Indonesian tourism industry and economy. "We also focus on building airports and harbors in Papua. In fact, 30 percent of the budget to build airports and harbors is allocated to Papua," he added.
