TEMPO.CO, Karangasem - Magma movements toward the surface of Mount Agung in Bali continue to increase, said the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho. “It is indicated by increased deep volcanic, shallow volcanic and local tectonic quakes,” he said in a written statement received today by Tempo.
Sutopo said that authorities yesterday recorded 564 volcanic quakes, 547 shallow volcanic quakes and 89 local tectonic quakes.
“The frequency of the quakes is greater than before.” Despite its high alert status or Level IV, it is yet unknown when Mount Agung will erupt. The eruption will depend on the magma build-up. “If the pressure is huge and capable of breaking the plug that holds back lava, an eruption will occur.”
