TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Massive restoration work will take place along the sidewalks of Jakarta from the Sudirman to MH Thamrin road. The project will cost the area its greeneries, as thousands of trees growing on the pavements will be removed.
"To the public, we want to apologize in advance because there will be pruning works soon," the Jakarta City Government's secretary Saefullah said here on Monday, Sept. 18.
Saefullah said the government is targeting the restoration project to be done by July next year.
The project is funded by leftover budget from the Simpang Susun Semanggi (Semanggi overpass) project from PT Keppel Land and PT Mitra Panca Persada (MPP) worth Rp219 billion.
According to Saefullah, some 3,000 pruned trees will be relocated to areas within proximate distances to government's assets such as the Bersih Manusiawi Berwibawa (BMW) Park in North Jakarta and the government's planting nursery.
"We need to relocate the trees because the pavements will be made very comfortable to pedestrians and cyclists," he said.
The project's groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled to take place on October 8.
