TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Police Criminal Investigation Corps director Sr. Comr. Adi Deriyan said that the detainment of Alfian Tanjung was to follow up a report filed by Indonesia Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) cadre Tanda Perdamaian Nasution.
“We follow up the report to complete the process,” Adi said today, September 7.
Alfian was just released from Surabaya Correctional Facility following a case surrounding hate speech in a sermon delivered at Mujahidin mosque in Surabaya.
However, a moment after the release on Wednesday at 4 pm, The East Java Police arrested Alfian and took him to Jakarta via Juanda International Airport. Alfian refused to comment about the arrest.
According to Adi, the report filed by Tanda Perdamaian Nasution with the Jakarta Police was related to hate speech contained in Alfian’s tweet in February 2017. Tanda views that Alfian had insulted PDIP for alleging some PDIP members as communists.
Adi revealed that the report had been escalated to the prosecutor’s office, but the dossier was returned as it was deemed incomplete. Police were asked to add a constitutional law expert witness.
In the case handled by the Jakarta Police, Alfian Tanjung was named as a suspect for spreading hate speech in May 2017. However, since late May, Alfian was detained by the National Police Criminal Investigation Corps (Bareskrim) based on a report filed by an individual from Surabaya.
