Religious Affairs Minister Urges Myanmar To Respect Rohingya

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Religious Affairs Minister Lukman Hakim Saifuddin urged Myanmar authority to respect the human rights of Rohingya ethic group currently suffering from act of violence from the country’s military forces.
"Myanmar has to respect human rights without favoring ethnicity and religion. Rohingya Muslims have to receive protection," Lukman said in Jakarta on Saturday (2/9).
He expressed that the tragedy of Rohingya is devastating as it also coincides with hajj pilgrimage period of moslems from across the globe. Islamic congregation is currently tracing the steps of humanity as conveyed by the last Prophet Muhammad PBUH. Our Prophet, he continued, said that human beings are forbidden from shedding blood of, seizing wealth of, and disrespecting others for any reasons.
He asked everyone to restrain themselves relating to Rohingya humanity crisis. Indonesian government has taken proactive and productive measures to help resolving the conflict. The measures among others include facilitating the establishment of Indonesia Humanitarian Alliance for Myanmar (AKIM) with 11 mass organizations and humanitarian institutions as members, urging Myanmar government to restore safety, stop violence, and provide protection and grant access to humanitarian aid.
In addition, our government also supports the implementation of resolution from former UN secretary general Kofi Annan. He added that Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi has reached out to a number of people to help resolve the conflict including UN secretary general Antonio Guteres, and a number of Foreign Affairs Ministers from other countries.
