TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A 6.2 magnitude earthquake hit the Mentawai Islands, West Sumatra, but there was no tsunami warning. The Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) spokesman Hary Djatmiko stated that in a written statement today, September 1.
The BMKG website reports that the earthquake was 10 kilometers deep. The epicenter was at 1.30 South latitude, 99.66 East longitude, 113 kilometers southwest of Padang and 87 kilometers southwest of Pariaman, West Sumatra.

Hary said that tremors were felt in Padang, Pariaman, Painan, Padang Panjang, Bukit Tinggi, Lima Puluh Kota, Tanah Datar, Solok, Mukomuko, North Bengkulu, Kepahiang, and Bengkulu.
Residents of Sikabaluan in Siberut Utara had evacuated to the Tamairang hill over tsunami fears following the quake.
