TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Wiranto said that Indonesia supports the South China Sea conflict settlement.
"We're glad that China and other countries have agreed to update the code of conduct on the peaceful resolution of the dispute concerning the South China Sea," Wiranto said after opening the International Security Symposium in Nusa Dua, Bali, today, August 24.
China claims almost all energy sources in south China sea that contribute Rp67 trillion per year. Other countries, namely Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia, Philippine, Taiwan, and Vietnam are also claiming the territory.
Wiranto explained that power show offs among countries involved in the dispute could cause a worse conflict.
“Countries involved must settle [the dispute] peacefully. No country should show off its power,” he suggested.
Wiranto hopes that the symposium can address the South China Sea issue. Indonesian Navy chief of staff Adm. Ade Supandi said that the symposium is aimed at discussing regional issues and partnerships.
“We’re trying to gather the navies of 35 countries across the Indian Ocean, as well as 25 members of the Western Pacific Naval Symposium,” Ade said.
