TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) met the secretary general of Vietnam Socialist Republic Party, Nguyen Phu Trong in Jakarta today, August 23. Among several issues discussed, the two men talked about the South China Sea problem.
Widodo and Nguyen met at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta accompanied by a number of Indonesian ministers and delegates from Vietnam.
On the occasion, President Jokowi also stressed the importance of maintaining the unity and centrality of ASEAN.

"The importance of working together is also the vision of the ASEAN community by 2025. We can say that there is good progress achieved within the framework that will be a solid basis for regulating comprehensive norms in the South China Sea," he said.
Both countries also agreed to make ASEAN an engine for creating peace and stability as well as regional welfare, said President Jokowi.
Meanwhile, Secretary General Nguyen Phu Trong said that his side is satisfied with the discussion about the South China Sea problem.
"In addressing the South China Sea issue, I am satisfied that this meeting will improve relations and bring good things to both countries, especially the contribution of all parties, including the people," he said.
