TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo alias Jokowi said that competitive pricing, among others, is key to the success of coffee shops run by Indonesian youth.

“The first is competitive pricing. [Then] its deliciousness and right taste for a lower price,” President Jokowi said today at the State Palace.

Jokowi said that Indonesia is home to various types of coffee, such as those of Gayo, Mandailing, Wamena, Jember and Kintamani.

Having admitted to not consuming coffee on a daily basis, the President said that he will continue to promote Indonesia’s commodities, including coffee.

Jokowi also expressed his appreciation to baristas’ role in presenting delicious added value coffee in a competitive market.

“It depends on the how to process [the coffee]. That’s where baristas play a key role; so, from now on, don’t sell raw coffee again,” he said.

Jokowi said that Indonesian coffee may be upgraded by improving the skills of baristas to make them more professional.

The President added that he will present Indonesian coffee to state guests in the celebration of the 72nd Indonesian Independence Day at the Palace. “We want to introduce local brands with 100% Indonesian ingredients. What about the taste? You can order yourselves and compare them with foreign brands,” President Jokowi said.
