TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - North Jakarta Mayor Husein Murad today, August 1, led the destruction of squatter settlements in BMW Park (Taman BMW) in Papanggo sub-district.
North Jakarta Mayor Husein Murad said a stadium will be built in the area. He expects the area to be cleared before the construction started.
The eviction involved the police, military members and other agencies. The local administration also deployed heavy-duty vehicles to destroy buildings and for leveling of the land. “Once the eviction finished, an outpost will be built to block squatters until the stadium is built,” Husein said.
The plan to build a stadium at Taman BMW was proposed by former Jakarta governor Joko Widodo. The project has not yet materialized due to a land dispute with PT Buana Permata Hijau who claims ownership of 11 hectares of land.
The claim was corroborated by the State Administrative Court’s ruling in February 2015 that canceled Jakarta administration’s land titles. The appellate court, however, has reversed the ruling. The administration was deemed fully entitled to the land.
PT Buana had filed an appeal to the Supreme Court to challenge the decision. As the North Jakarta administration destroyed squatter settlements at Taman BMW this morning, a sign board belong to the company was installed in the area.
