TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) Ministry performed a trial run on using plastic waste in asphalt mixture. The trial was done based on a study conducted by Udayana University researcher in Bali and it was intended to cut down the amount of plastic waste in the sea up to 70 percent until 2025.
The Ministry’s Research and Development head Danis Hidayat Sumadilaga said that the use of plastic waste as asphalt mixture serves as a solution to deal with plastic waste problems. In the trial, 700 meters long of plastic asphalt was laid in Udayana University, Bali.
One kilometer of road is 7 meters wide, Danis said, and it needs at least 2,5 to 5 tons of plastic waste mix.
"So we can imagine if this really works and we can implement this solution to thousands of kilometers of roads in Indonesia," Danis explained on Saturday (29/7).
