TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla and Vietnam Deputy Prime Minister Vuong Dinh Hue met at today in Jakarta to discuss maritime cooperation.
“We discussed the management of joint patrols between Indonesia and Vietnam to prevent unwanted things and, therefore, he also thanked [Indonesia] for repatriating 600 of their fishermen who were the victims of human trafficking in Maluku; so, we will improve our relation,” the VP Jusuf Kalla said.
Moreover, VP Kalla added that Indonesian and Vietnam’s delegates will be meeting in Hanoi, Vietnam, in early August to discuss joint patrols, illegal fishing mitigation, and border administrations.
“Yes, we will also cooperate because the two nations have agreed to address illegal fishing and administrative [issues]; all will be resolved together,” he said.
Indonesia and Vietnam has a pending agreement on the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) boundaries following a meeting held on April 27 in Yogyakarta.
Moreover, Vice President Kalla and Deputy PM Vuong also discussed the visit of Nguyen Phu Trong, secretary-general of the Communist Party of Vietnam, in the end of August this year.
On the other hand, Deputy PM Vuong also welcomed President Joko Widodo’s plan to join Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in November in Danang, Vietnam.
Earlier, the Deputy PM and his delegates had met with Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi to talk in details about bilateral cooperation and strategic partnerships.
